Unfortunately, Kubuntu has no splash image set by default, which might be upsetting for some people. The good news is, however, that setting a Grub splash image is a rather easy process and anyone with Gimp installed OR ImageMagick should be able to do it.

First of all, you'll need an image. Search the web for a nice image with your distribution's logo or any other image, or open-up Gimp and do it yourself. However, pay attention to the image's resolution, because Grub needs a 640x480 image and we don't want to end-up with a deformed image. Therefore, only search for images with a resolution of 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 etc.

Create the image

Method 1 - ImageMagick:

     - Once you found an image, assuming it's called splash.png and you have ImageMagick installed, open a terminal, change directory to where the image is located and run the following command:

CODE

$ cd /path/to/where/splash.png/is/located
$ convert -resize 640x480 -colors 14 splash.png splash.xpm && gzip splash.xpm

Method 2 - Gimp:

- Start Gimp
- Go to File / New (or type Ctrl + N)
- In the Create New Image dialog, choose a 640px Width and 480px Height
- Create the image you'd like to use as splash image. Experiment with Gimp tools or load (open as layer) an image and edit it.
- When you're done, go to Image / Mode / Indexed, select optimal palette, 14 maximum colors and click OK.
- Finally, right click on the image, select File / Save as and choose the name 'splash.xpm' for the image. Save it in a directory of your choice.
- Open a terminal, change dir to that directory:

CODE

$ cd /where/you/saved/splash.xpm

- And add it into an archive:

CODE

$ gzip splash.xpm

Configure GRUB to display the splash image

- Now, create a grub directory and move the splash image to it:

CODE

$ chmod 644 splash.xpm.gz
$ sudo mkdir /boot/grub/splashimages
$ sudo cp splash.xpm.gz /boot/grub/splashimages

- Back-up the current Grub menu.lst:

CODE

$ sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.old

- Finally, open menu.lst in a text editor and add the following line at the top of the file:

CODE

splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splashimages/splash.xpm.gz

NOTE! Check if the numbers between the brackets are THE SAME as the kernel you normally choose from the Grub list at boot time. Scroll down the menu.lst file and find the kernel normally used. Look at root directive to check the numbers in the brackets and then look at the kernel directive and check if there's a /boot/directory before vmlinuz. If there isn't, delete it from the splashimage also:

CODE

splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splashimages/linuxinside.xpm.gz

- Save the menu.lst file and reboot. If everything worked out well, Grub should display the new splash image.

This guide should work on any Linux distribution using GRUB as the boot manager. However, alternatively, for (K)Ubuntu, you can install the following packages:

CODE

Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get install grub-splashimages

or

CODE

Kubuntu
$ sudo apt-get install kubuntu-grub-splashimages

After the package has been installed, check the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to see if the splashimage directive has been correctly added.

How to Install Source Files in linux

source files contain the programs and hence before the installation you need to compile them… so you need to install the build-essentials A quick tour of the Applications, Places, and System menus indicated that converting from Windows to Linux would be relatively seemless. The only fly in the ointment was my inability to get any of three wireless adapters to work with the OS.

World-class applications without paying a dime

I expected to find the Mozilla Firefox browser bundled with Ubuntu, and seeing links on the Applications*Office menu to OpenOffice.org's Database, Presentation, Spreadsheet, and Word Processor apps--all of which are compatible with their Microsoft Office equivalents--was no surprise. But some of Ubuntu's other built-in programs were a nice bonus: the F-Spot Photo Manager, GIMP Image Editor, OpenOffice.org Drawing app, and XSane Image Scanner give you all the graphics functions you're likely to need; and for audio and video processing, you get Movie Player, Rhythmbox Music Player, Serpentine Audio CD-Creator, Sound Juicer CD Extractor, and Sound Recorder.
[Cue late-night-TV announcer] But wait, there's more! For VoIP, use the Ekiga Softphone app; for e-mail, there's the popular Evolution open-source program; and when the IM bug bites, open the Pidgen client (previously known as Gaim), which supports just about every IM system out there. You also get about a dozen games, including Blackjack, Sudoku, and a Tetris knockoff; there's even a version of my favorite time-waster, Mahjongg.

Fly in the Ubuntu ointment: Wireless woes

"Too good to be true," I'm thinking as I work my way through Ubuntu's many options. And indeed I hit the wall when I tried to connect to my wireless network. The Linksys WPC300N PCMCIA adapter worked without a hitch when I booted the laptop in XP, but Ubuntu didn't recognize it. I searched the many Ubuntu forums for a solution and found that the Ndiswrapper utilities I needed to mimic the adapter's Windows driver weren't enabled. I tried the adapter again after enabling the wrappers, but still got nowhere. Next I downloaded and installed the Ndisgtk utility that lets you install device drivers without having to deal with the command line in Ubuntu's Terminal application.

copied the driver files from their CD to the Ubuntu desktop, and then pointed to the appropriate .inf file in the Wireless Network Drivers utility it added (via the System*Administration*Windows Wireless Drivers shortcut that Ndisgtk provides). I now had a "Wireless connection" option in the Network Settings window (see below), but no matter how I configured the connection, I couldn't log onto my wireless network.

After going through the same process with another PCMCIA card and a USB wireless adapter and getting the same results, I decided to do some more trolling for a solution on the Linux forums. I tried several of the suggestions offered by forum denizens, but nothing worked. That's when I decided to stick with the wired Ethernet link, which connected to the network right away.
While the wireless glitches made me glad I dual-booted Ubuntu with Windows (so I could simply load Windows when I needed to connect to a wireless network), I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to use Ubuntu the same way I use Windows, at least not until I figure out why I couldn't get Ubuntu to establish a wireless link. I haven't given up hope of replacing Windows with Linux, but neither am I willing to spend hours searching for a solution to a problem I can avoid simply by loading Windows.

ref : http://www.cnet.com/8301-13880_1-9839735-68.html

Tips for successful Kernel Recompilation in Linux

"Kernel compilation is a tough nut to crack" - Most frequently this would be followed by a sigh if the recompiled kernel is not booting up. Though the nut has the look of a tough one to crack, kernel recompilation is still an inescapable affair that every Linux system administrator runs into, sooner or later. I too had to. With this article, I intend to walk you through the phases of compiling a kernel. I am sure it will inspire confidence in you so that compiling a kernel is no longer a "mission impossible".
What is a kernel?

Keeping it simple, kernel is the central part of most of the operating systems. The main functions of kernel include process management,resource management etc. It is the first part of operating system that is loaded in to the RAM when the machine is booted and it will remain in the main memory. Since the kernel stays in the main memory, it is important that it should be as small as possible.

In Linux, kernel is a single file called vmlinuz which is stored in the folder /boot, where vm represents virtual memory and z at the end of the filename denotes that it is compressed.

When do we recompile a kernel?

To reduce the size of the kernel:

Suppose you are a Linux fanatic and you need an OS in your mobile. The typical OS you get has the all the miscellaneous components and has size in GB s, which you can't afford in your mobile. If I were you, I would do a kernel recompilation, and remove unwanted modules.

When the size of the kernel is reduced removing the unwanted items, less memory will be used which in turn will increase the resource available to applications.

To add or remove support for devices:

For each device, a device driver is needed for communicating with the operating system. For example, if a USB device is attached to a computer, we need to enable the corresponding device driver for it to work. In technical terms, the support for USB driver is to be enabled in the kernel.

To modify system parameters:

System parameters include high memory support, quota support etc. For managing physical memory above 4 GB, high memory support (64 GB) needs to be enabled.

How do we recompile a kernel?

Verify and update the packages required

Obtain kernel source

Obtain current hardware details

Configure kernel

Build kernel

Configure the Boot loader

Reboot the server

1. Verify and update the packages required

You need to do this step only if you upgrade the kernel from version 2.4 to 2.6. You can skip this step if it is a 2.6.x to 2.6.x upgrade.

Before upgrading the kernel, you need to make sure that your system is capable of accepting the new kernel. Check the utilities that interact with your system, and verify that they are up-to-date. If they are not, go ahead and upgrade them first.

The main packages to be checked and upgraded are : binutils, e2fsprogs, procps, gcc and module-init-tools

You should take extreme care while upgrading module-init-tools. A module is a piece of code that can be inserted into the kernel on demand. Module-init-tools provide utilities for managing Linux kernel modules - for loading, unloading,listing and removing modules.

The main utilities available are :

insmod

rmmod

modprobe

depmod

lsmod

Both modprobe and insmod are used to insert modules. The only difference is that insmod doesn't know the location of the module and is unaware of dependencies. Modprobe does this by parsing the file /lib/modules/<kernel>/modules.dep

How to install module-init-tools

Get the source http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/module-init-tools/module-init-tools-3.2.2.tar.gzto the server using wget and untar it.

tar -zxf module-init-tools-3.2.2.tar.gz
2. Configure it.
cd module-init-tools-3.2.2
./configure --prefix=/
3. Rename the existing 2.4 version of this utility as utility.old
make moveold
4. Build and install.
make
make install

5. Run the script generate-modprobe.conf to convert the entries in the module configuration file for kernel version 2.4 ( /etc/modules.conf ) to a file used by kernel version 2.6 (/etc/modprobe.conf)
./generate-modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.conf
6. Check the version of current module-init-tools
depmod -V

2. Obtain the Kernel Source

Get the kernel source from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/

You can download the source to the /usr/src/kernels folder in your server. If you are planning to recompile your kernel to version 2.6.19.2, the steps would be :

[root]#cd /usr/src/kernels
[root]#wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.19.2.tar.gz
[root]#tar zxf linux-2.6.19.2.tar.gz
[root]#cd linux-2.6.19.2

3. Obtain the Current Hardware Details

The current Hardware details can be obtained using the following commands:

lspci

This utility gives the details about the network card and all devices attached to the machine. If you type lspci and get an error "lscpi: command not found", you will have to install pciutils-2.1.99.test8-3.4 rpm in the server.

A typical lspci output will be as follows :

[root@XXXXX ~]# lspci
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] PCI/PCI-X Bridge
00:02.0 Host bridge: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] Legacy South Bridge
00:02.1 IDE interface: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] IDE
00:02.2 ISA bridge: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] LPC
00:03.0 USB Controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] USB (rev 01)
00:03.1 USB Controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] USB (rev 01)
00:03.2 USB Controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] USB (rev 01)
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)
00:18.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration
00:18.1 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Address Map
00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller
00:18.3 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]
K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] Miscellaneous Control
01:0d.0 PCI bridge: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000]
PCI/PCI-X Bridge (rev b2)
01:0e.0 RAID bus controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000]
SATA (Native SATA Mode)
02:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation
NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
02:03.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation
NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)
[root@XXXXX ~]#

cat /proc/cpuinfo

The processor details can be obtained from the file /proc/cpuinfo

[root@XXXX ~]# cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 15
model : 35
model name : Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 170
stepping : 2
cpu MHz : 1996.107
cache size : 1024 KB
physical id : 0
siblings : 2
core id : 0
cpu cores : 2
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca
cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht pni syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt
lm 3dnowext 3dnow pni
bogomips : 3992.34
[root@XXXXX ~]#

modinfo

Another useful tool to obtain hardware information is modinfo. It gives detailed description about modules. Before using modinfo, you may need to find out currently loaded modules. lsmod is the utility that lists currently loaded modules.

[root@XXXXXX ~]# lsmod
libata 105757 1 sata_svw
[root@ XXXXXX~]#
lsmod displays a module sata_svw and more details of this module can be obtained as shown below.
[root@XXXXX ~]# modinfo sata_svw
filename: /lib/modules/2.6.9-55.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/ata/sata_svw.ko
author: Benjamin Herrenschmidt
description: low-level driver for K2 SATA controller
license: GPL
version: 2.0 9FF8518CB6CD3CB4AE61E35
vermagic: 2.6.9-55.ELsmp SMP 686 REGPARM 4KSTACKS gcc-3.4
depends: libata
alias: pci:v00001166d00000240sv*sd*bc*sc*i*
alias: pci:v00001166d00000241sv*sd*bc*sc*i*
alias: pci:v00001166d00000242sv*sd*bc*sc*i*
alias: pci:v00001166d0000024Asv*sd*bc*sc*i*
alias: pci:v00001166d0000024Bsv*sd*bc*sc*i*
[root@xxxxxx~]#

4. Configure the Kernel

Once you have the source, the next step is to configure the kernel.

You can configure the kernel using any of the following :

make config - This is a text based command line interface that will ask each and every configuration question in order.

make xconfig - This is a graphical editor that requires x to be installed in the system. Hence it is not used in servers.

make oldconfig - A text based interface that takes an existing configuration file and queries for any variable not enabled in that configuration file.

make menuconfig - A text based menu configurator based on cursor-control libraries. This is the most commonly used method for configuring kernels in servers.

If you are a newbie, I would recommend using the existing configuration and use make menuconfig to configure the kernel.

Steps for configuring your kernel are :

Step 1: Copy the current kernel configuration to your new kernel source.

[root@XXXXX ~]#pwd
/usr/src/kernels/linux-2.6.19.2
[root@XXXXX ~]#cp /boot/config-<current_kernel_version> .config
[root@XXXXX ~]#make oldconfig
where <current_kernel_version> should be replaced with the existing kernel version in the server. You can get <current_kernel_version> in the server using the command :
[root@XXXXX ~]# uname -r
2.6.9-67.ELsmp2.6.9-67.ELsmp
[root@XXXXX ~]#
When make oldconfig prompts for values, retain the old values.
Even if you retain the old values, don't forget to check the hardware of the server as well as the processor type and the model of the ethernet card. Since options change with newer kernel versions, and some options may not be there in the old .config files, it is advisable to double check all the options using menuconfig.

Step 2: make menuconfig.

[root@XXXXX ~]#make menuconfig

This is the main screen of menuconfig. Only some options can be compiled as modules. In menuconfig, they are marked < >. Press M to compile as a module. A [*] means compiled in, M means module.

Menuconfig offers search feature. Use "/" to search for any module. For eg: if you are not sure of the location of the module iptables, press "/" , enter the search pattern as "iptables" and press enter.

As there are a lot of options in menuconfig, I will just mention the important ones. The essential options needed for a kernel to be running is processor, file system, network card and hard disk. You can select the desired processor, file system, hard disk and network card from the options available in menuconfig.

Processor type and features

Subarchitecture Type : Select Generic architecture (Summit,bigsmp, ES7000, default)

Processor family : Select the matching processor from the available list. For eg : If the model name is Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 170 , you can select Opteron/Athlon64/Hammer/K8 from the options available.

For a multiprocessor server, enable the options Symmetric multi-processing support and SMT (Hyper threading) scheduler support.

For RAM > 4 GB enable the option High Memory Support (64GB) . And the final output of the option Processor type and features would look like this :

Networking

Iptables is enabled in this option.

Location:
-> Networking
-> Networking support (NET [=y])
-> Networking options
-> Network packet filtering (replaces ipchains) (NETFILTER [=y])
-> Core Netfilter Configuration and IP: Netfilter Configuration

All the modules under the option Core Netfilter Configuration and IP: Netfilter Configuration should be enabled as modules.

Device Drivers

This is the most confusing part. In this, the main options you need to check are :

1. Block devices : Enable RAM disk support and Loop back device support

Include Loopback device support (module)
RAM disk support [*} compiled in
Leave the default values of RAM disk number and size.
Initial RAM disk (initrd) support [*} compiled in

2. SCSI device support : Enable corresponding model in SCSI low level drivers if it is a SCSI device.

3. Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers: if hard disk is SATA, enable the corresponding driver in this. For eg: if you have Intel PIIX/ICH SATA in the server enable Intel PIIX/ICH SATA support in this option

4. Network device support : Enable the corresponding network card in the server. For eg: if lspci lists the network card as follows :

Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit Ethernet

Then enable

> Network device support
> Ethernet (1000 Mbit)ss
> Broadcom NetXtremeII support

File Systems

The main modules to be enabled in this section are ext2, ext3, journaling and Quota support.

Once this is complete , save the settings and quit.

5. Build the Kernel

The next step is to build the Kernel. You can use the command make bzImage to do this. This command will create a compressed file bzImage inside arch/i386/boot in the Linux source directory and that is the newly compiled kernel.

The next step is to compile and link the modules. This can be done using the command make modules.

After this you have to copy the modules to /lib/modules/. And this is done using the command make modules_install.

The command sequence is as follows :

make -j<number> bzImage
make -j<number> modules
make -j<number> modules-Install

-j tells your system to do that many jobs in Makefile together which will in turn reduce the time for compilation.

<number> is two times the number of cpus in your system or number of virtual processors. This number can be found using the command

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep ^processor | wc -l

[root@XXXX]# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep ^processor | wc -l
2

Once this is done copy all these to the /boot folder as follows :

cp .config /boot/config-2.6.19.2
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19.2
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.19.2
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.9.img 2.6.19.2

mkinitrd is the program to create initial RAM Disk Image.

6. Configure Boot Loader

Boot loader is the first program that runs when a computer boots. There are two types of boot loader :

GRUB

LILO

1. Determine the currently installed boot loader :

Check first 512 bytes of the boot drive. Check for grub first:

# dd if=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 2>&1 | grep GRUB

If it matches, the current boot loader is grub. Check for lilo if it did not match:

# dd if=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 2>&1 | grep LILO

Note : If the hard disk is SCSI or SATA, use sda instead of hda..

2. Configure the boot loader

If your boot loader is LILO, add entries for the new kernel in the file /etc/lilo.conf. A typical lilo entry will be as given below :

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19.2
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.19.2.img
read-only
append="console=tty0 console=ttyS1,19200n8 clock=pmtmr root=LABEL=/"

Run the command :

lilo -v
/sbin/lilo -R "Label for new kernel"

In the case of GRUB, add the entries for the new kernel at the end of the list of kernels in the file /etc/grub.conf. The first entry in GRUB gets the index 0. An example entry is below :

title Red Hat Linux (2.6.19.2)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.19.2 ro root=/dev/hda2 panic=3
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.19.2

The "panic" parameter ensures that the server reboots to the old kernel, in the case of a kernel panic i.e the machine will be rebooted to the default option in grub.conf, if a panic occurs in 3 secs.

Do Not change the "default" value in the file grub.conf. Enter grub command prompt by typing the command grub at the prompt. Enter the below command at the grub prompt:

savedefault --default=3 --once

This is the case if the newly added entry is having index 3. Exit from grub-shell.

7.Reboot the Server

Reboot the server using the command reboot. If by any chance, a kernel panic occurs, server will be up with the old working kernel. If everything goes fine, the server will be up with the new kernel. Once it is up with the new kernel, do not forget to change the default value in the boot loader.

Conclusion

Booting a newly recompiled kernel in your first attempt is a tough task and is at times thought impossible. Following the above steps and keeping the compilation tricks in mind, there is no doubt Kernel Compilation will now be a piece of cake.

Linux Mint

Linux Mint is one of the surprise packages of the past year. Originally launched as a variant of Ubuntu with integrated media codecs, it has now developed into one of the most user-friendly distributions on the market - complete with a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, a web-based package installation interface, and a number of different editions. Perhaps most importantly, this is one project where the developers and users are in constant interaction, resulting in dramatic, user-driven improvements with every new release.

Some of the reasons for the success of Linux Mint are:

* It's one of the most community driven distributions. You could literally post an idea in the forums today and see it implemented the week after in the "current" release. Of course this has pros and cons and compared to distributions with roadmaps, feature boards and fixed release cycles we miss a lot of structure and potentially a lot of quality, but it allows us to react quickly, implement more innovations and make the whole experience for us and for the users extremely exciting.
* It is a Debian-based distribution and as such it is very solid and it comes with one of the greatest package managers.
* It is compatible with and uses Ubuntu repositories. This gives Linux Mint users access to a huge collection of packages and software.
* It comes with a lot of desktop improvements which make it easier for the user to do common things.
* There is a strong focus on making things work out of the box (WiFi cards drivers in the file system, multimedia support, screen resolution, etc).

links:
http://www.linuxmint.com

Enabling Compiz Fusion On An Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop (ATI Mobility Radeon 9200)

Enabling Compiz Fusion On An Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop (ATI Mobility Radeon 9200)

Version 1.0
Author: Falko Timme <ft>
Last edited 11/12/2007

This tutorial shows how you can enable Compiz Fusion on an Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) desktop (the system must have a 3D-capable graphics card - I'm using an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 here). With Compiz Fusion you can use beautiful 3D effects like wobbly windows or a desktop cube on your desktop.

This document comes without warranty of any kind! I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!

1 Preliminary Note

I have tried this on my 3-year old HP Pavilion zt3000 notebook which has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphic card, and it works really good there.

2 Restricted Drivers Manager

If you're using a new Nvidia or ATI graphic card, you will most likely have to install a proprietary driver for it which you can do under System > Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager. If you are not sure, please try to get Compiz Fusion working without a proprietary driver first, and if it doesn't work, install the proprietary driver for your graphic card using the Restricted Drivers Manager. I don't have to do this because my ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 is old enough to be supported by default. :-)

3 Installing Compiz Fusion

Open the Synaptic Package Manager (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager):

Use the Search function and search for compizconfig:

You should find the package compizconfig-settings-manager in the results. Click on it and select Mark for Installation:

In the Appearance Preferences window, go to the Visual Effects tab and make sure that Custom is selected. That's it already. To configure Compiz Fusion, you can click on the Preferences button...

... but you can do the same by going to System >
In both cases the CompizConfig Settings Manager opens where you can define the behaviour of Compiz Fusion:

5 Keyboard Shortcuts

Here's a list of the most common Compiz Fusion keyboard shortcuts:

SUPER+SHIFT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE by Havoc Pennington

<ins class="item-body">

Here’s a tour of the pre-alpha demo release of GNOME Online Desktop included in Fedora 8. Learn more about what it does and how you can get involved in the project.

What is it?

GNOME Online Desktop is an alternate “mode” or flavor of the GNOME desktop. We’re experimenting with a few different things here.

1. The overall concept of tightly integrating the web into the desktop, as described at live.gnome.org/OnlineDesktop/Vision.

2. Specific user interface ideas, such as a desktop sidebar called BigBoard.

3. A set of platform components that support web integration–these can be used with any application or UI, including the more traditional GNOME desktop flavor.

The platform components are hard to see in the screenshots, of course. But this tour shows off some of the user interface ideas.

Trying it out

Install the packages “online-desktop,” “mugshot,” and “bigboard.” This should mean there’s a session for Online Desktop available from the login screen (gdm). An easy way to try things out is to add the User Switch applet to your panel and create a new user account. Then use the User Switch applet to switch to your new user, and choose the Online Desktop session on the login screen.

Once you log in, you’ll have to create an account on online.gnome.org and sign in to that account. When your browser is logged in to online.gnome.org, the rest of the desktop will use the browser cookie to authenticate as well.

If at any point the sidebar seems seriously confused, don’t be afraid to press Alt+F2 and run
bigboard --replace
to restart it.

Overview

This screenshot shows a typical desktop just after login. Moving counterclockwise:

Sidebar with search box, file list, applications, people, calendar, photos

Applet with a show/hide sidebar button, and mini-launcher icons to start apps without opening the sidebar

Mugshot Stacker application in the tray

Firefox, with the new Fedora start page

More detail follows.

“Self” Area (top of sidebar)

At the top of the sidebar, you’ll see your own photo (avatar) and name. The idea is to show who’s logged in, which is handy if you use user switching. Clicking on this area opens a little menu with options to open the control center, log out, etc.

The small Flickr, Picasa, and LinkedIn icons underneath my picture are quick links to go to my page on those sites.

Search

The search box on the sidebar shows results from each of the widgets on the sidebar. In this shot, you can see file results from the Files widget, application results from Applications, people from People, and so forth.
The search box can be used to run applications, open someone’s profile page, or open a file.

Files

The Files widget shows your local recent files in the same way the regular GNOME panel does, but it merges in any documents you’re working on using a web service. Right now, it only supports Google Documents. I use Google Documents for most of my word processing, but I also have PDFs and similar files on my local system. The Files widget combines all these documents into one searchable list.

If you click “More” on the Files widget, a detailed window opens to search through your recent files.

Application Launching, Discovery, and Installation

Application launching and simple desktop-oriented “package management” are integrated into a single design.
If you want to launch one of your commonly-used apps, just click.

If this is your first time logging in–perhaps because you’re using a USB key or live CD distribution–the apps you usually use might not be installed. But since this is the online desktop, it knows which apps you usually use anyway. Say, for example, you forgot to install Nibbles:

Just click, and it will install the missing program.

If you want to search through all apps (including those not yet installed), open the app browser.

You can also browse online.gnome.org/applications.

You might notice that the app browser makes suggestions. For example, it tells you about the new Gourmet Recipe Manager in this screenshot. This is not an application you have installed; it’s an application from the online.gnome.org/applications database that other people have been using.

In the future, we’d like to extend online.gnome.org/applications to support star ratings, user comments, and so forth. For now it ranks apps purely based on how often they’re used.

(Technical details: If you enable application tracking, the online desktop looks at the currently-focused window to decide what you’re using. It will count each application only once per day. It does not send any information about your windows or window titles to the server. It identifies the app on the client side and sends the name of the package you used to the server to be counted.)

People

The People widget should become a lot more elaborate over time. It’s very simple right now, just a quick way to go to someone’s homepages on the sites they use (photo sites, blogs, etc.)

The idea is that this will become a “supercharged” IM buddy list showing presence on multiple IM networks, activity on multiple sites, what music people have playing, and so forth. Much of the infrastructure and information is already on the server (and shows up in the Mugshot Stacker application), but the People widget user interface hasn’t been completed. Showing everyone’s current music track is one of my favorite features.

If you click More on the People widget, there’s a people browser window that opens up. This lets you see everyone you know, rather than the few people who fit on the sidebar.

One future direction would be to integrate the People widget with file management and other sharing-your-stuff scenarios, so you can drag a file onto someone’s picture to offer it to them, or open a remote desktop session to help them debug a problem.

Calendar

The calendar widget is pretty self-explanatory. Right now it only supports Google Calendar, but the idea would be to support whatever people use.

One problem with web-based calendars is that they can’t use the desktop APIs to give you a notification when events are coming up, so the online desktop includes a notifier that watches your Google Calendar events.

A great thing about a web-based calendar program is that you can access it from any computer and even your cell phone.

Email

There’s no widget for email yet, but Bryan Clark has design mockups at live.gnome.org showing the concept.

In the meantime, we have already implemented mail notification bubbles for Google Mail.

Minimized Sidebar Mode

It can be annoying to keep a sidebar open all the time, especially if you don’t have a widescreen monitor.
The applet in the bottom-left corner of the screen supports using the sidebar in “Minimized” mode. You can enable this mode from Sidebar Preferences by clicking on your picture at the top of the sidebar. In Minimized mode, the sidebar is normally hidden but pops out when you press the Windows key or when you click the panel applet.

The panel applet also includes the same application launchers shown in the Applications widget on the sidebar. This lets you quickly launch apps without opening the sidebar.

Preferences Sync - Behind the Scenes

There’s a small daemon called online-prefs-sync-daemon, which uses whitelists kept in /usr/share/online-prefs-sync/ to store certain gconf settings on the online.gnome.org server. These settings should be instantly applied across any computers running the online desktop. So changing something like your desktop background would change it on all systems.

Lots of fine-tuning remains to make this work perfectly, but if you change your desktop background, you should see it in action already.

Learn More or Get Involved

We’re hacking on this at live.gnome.org/OnlineDesktop and on the mailing list.

For background, see the vision page and slides from the GUADEC presentation.

Luis Villa is working on a slide about how we can preserve free software values in a world where “cloud hosted” software is a reality. In the meantime, here’s a blog entry he wrote with relevant links.

At least two commercial products, Zonbu and gOS, have appeared recently, showing how the Online Desktop might be offered to consumers. These companies are using one-off software, though, since the mainstream distributions and desktops don’t have a solution in this area yet.

Because Online Desktop can keep your preferences and documents online, it’s ideal for a live CD, and we’d love to have someone keeping a recent snapshot available in live CD form.

We aren’t defining this project narrowly. Our goal is “the perfect window to the Internet: integrated with all your favorite online apps, secure and virus-free, simple to set up, and zero maintenance thereafter.” That leaves quite a bit of work to do.

About the author

Havoc Pennington is a long-time Red Hat, GTK+, and Linux desktop developer who is currently working on the GNOME Online Desktop
